Description
Averrhoa carambola, belonging to the Oxalidaceae family, is a tree native to Sri Lanka, India and the Moluccas Islands; widespread throughout Southeast Asia, it is also cultivated in Brazil, Ghana, Guyana and in French Polynesia. It is a slow-growing tree that can reach a height of between 5 and 12 m, tends to take on a bushy habit.
The star fruit or star fruit so called because it assumes this shape if cut into wedges in cross section, has a beautiful yellow-orange color, and is easily recognized by the five-pointed star section. When fully ripe, it has a beautiful yellow-orange color. In the places of origin it is also consumed green, squeezed into dishes such as a lemon or sliced in salads. The taste of carambola is a mixture of different fruits, such as lemon, pineapple, plum.
Contains phenols and flavonoids such as quercetin, gallic acid, catechin, epicatechin and proanthocyanins and has found use in some cases as headache, nausea, cough, insomnia, hypertension and diabetes.
It has a low glycemic value and is also among the fruit with the lowest calorie levels.
It contains few carbohydrates and very few fats but good amounts of vitamins A and C, of which it has even 57% out of 100g of product, it contains antioxidants and minerals.
A starfruit contains about 30 calories and is an excellent source of fiber, vitamins and water.
It is rich in potassium, which is precious for the correct maintenance of muscles and since it really contains high quantities it is not recommended for those suffering from renal insufficiency.
The starfruit being a tropical plant loves warm climates and sunny exposures. Cultivation is not considered demanding, but particular attention must be paid to periods of frost, in which the plant must be protected. The starfruit suffers from drought, so watering must be frequent. When fully ripe, the fruit has a beautiful golden yellow color and resists at room temperature for 3 or 4 days.
