Description
The Santolina is a shrub plant belonging to the Compositae family. At the base the plant is woody and takes on the appearance of a small, very branched shrub, slightly higher than half a meter. The leaves are persistent, minute, typically aromatic and gray-green. In summer it produces small, yellow, rounded flowers, gathered in apical inflorescences. Ideal as a border plant for very decorative foliage.
It prefers a dry, well drained and sunny soil. It does not tolerate moisture. Water as needed. It bears well the winter climate.
The harvest of leaves and flowers takes place throughout the year. They can be used both fresh and dried. The branches of the plant can be dried upside down and subsequently stored in an airtight container.
If you use some fresh leaf in green sauces to give a particular flavor or especially in fish dishes. It can be used as an anti-moth in the cupboards after drying it. In the past it was also used as a remedy against mosquitoes.
