Nanking cherry (Prunus tomentosa) is a species of Prunus native to northern and western China (including Tibet), Korea, Mongolia, and India. It is a deciduous shrub, irregular in shape, which can reach 3/4 meters in height. The leaves are alternate, 2-7 cm long and 1-3.5 cm broad, oval to obovate, acuminate with irregularly serrated margins, wrinkled, dark green, pubescent above and tormented below, with glandular petioles. The flowers are white / pink in a scarlet calyx.

Nanking-cherry is self-fertile.

The fruits are sweet cherries just slightly acidic, from 0.5 to 1.5cm wide, rarely up to 2.5cm, scarlet that ripen at the beginning of summer.

The freshly consumed cherry fruit from Nanjing is very refreshing, but is mostly used in juices or jams.
