MALAY APPLE ‘Syzygium Jambos’

VASO: Ø CM 18/ LT: 3,7

It is a bushy sapling native to India, from where it has spread to all tropical and subtropical countries due to its marked adaptability to the climate. It is a very ornamental plant, which stands out for the bright vinous red color of the leaves at the young stage. The flowers are very showy, due to the presence of numerous long ivory-colored stamens.

The fruits, which ripen in July-August, are as big as small apricots, spherical-oval in shape, yellowish with accentuated pink shades. The pulp, difficult to separate from the thin skin, is sweet and deliciously scented with pink petals: hence the common name Melarosa; internally it usually contains a large seed.

Rose apple contains 40 kcal per 100 g. It is a fruit very rich in phenols, anthocyanins and numerous antioxidants, its consumption is in fact prescribed to fight inflammatory states (especially of the throat) and to lower blood pressure.

Popular tradition also attributes to it diuretic, carminative, astringent, antimicrobial, antiscorbutic properties. The major nutritional principles contained only ascorbic acid, carotene, potassium.

Recent studies have shown the efficacy of rose apple in fighting diarrhea and some diseases through its antibiotic capabilities given by particular tannins and phytosterols.

The cultivation of the Melarosa is quite easy: it requires a mild climate, well-drained soil and summer irrigation. In the tropics it is often used as a windbreak; in our gardens it can be inserted, due to its beautiful and wide polychrome foliage, as an ornamental plant.
