Black Goji ‘Lycium Ruthenicum’ is a perennial plant, native to Central Asia and distributed from China to Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and the Indian Himalayas. It commonly grows in Karakorum, at an altitude of about 3,700 m above sea level. In the trans-Himalayan region of Ladakh, it is located at an altitude of about 3,100 m above sea level. It can reach 2 meters in height. In winter it loses the leaf, it resists up to -25 °.

Fruits are the rich source of carotenoids, vitamins B1, B2, vitamin C; traces of minerals such as iron, zinc and selenium; betaine alkaloid and other phyto-constituents. It is used for the treatment of diabetes, anemia, vision problems, impotence, pulmonary disorders; it can improve liver and kidney functions and strengthen the immune system to prevent cancer and AIDS. This less explored but high medicinal value plant of Indian Trans-Himalaya, in particular Ladakh has immense importance in the traditional system of medicine and the correct scientific validation and identification of its new bio-active components is necessary for the development of herbal base of this plant.

The black goji contains 17 types of amino acids, 13 trace elements and has nutritional values much higher than those of the better known red Goji (Chinese and Barbarum), essential minerals and trace minerals, and above all contains the anthocyanins, powerful antioxidants that protect the body from damage free radicals, help improve the elasticity of blood vessels, improve microcirculation and smoothness of the skin, inhibit inflammation and allergies as well as improve joint flexibility.

It favors sunny areas. It resists well to drought.
