It’s a climbing plant, native to China, Japan and Korea. The thin, flexible, green-brown stems have rapid and vigorous growth, and can be grown on walls or trellises, or left on the ground, using the plant as a thick ground cover. The leaves are palmate, dark green, opaque and waxy, divided into five small oval leaves, sometimes elongated; in general, the new leaves are reddish in color.

The fruit of Akebia quinata is an edible pod, emitting a very delicate and intoxicating aroma. It has a strange long shape and internally contains the edible pulp.
In late summer the fruit ripens and opens itself, revealing its irregularly dark brown seeds. The fruit is very sweet, leaving a very special taste in the mouth. It has a characteristic juicy consistency. Even the outer skin of the fruit is edible. Unlike the fruit, the peel has a slightly bitter taste.
It preferes sunny place and tolerates even the half-shade without problems and also develops in complete shade, where it produces only a few flowers. The akebia do not fear the cold and can endure even very harsh winters.
